I let my son’s girlfriend go because she didn’t know how to cook: Kennedy Agyapong

Outspoken politician and Member of Parliament for Assin South, Kennedy Agyapong, has disclosed that he sacked his son’s girlfriend because she did not know how to cook.

The politician made this revelation on Yvonne Okoro’s ‘Cooks and Braggarts’ show. He said his son’s girlfriend had to go because it was important for every woman to know how to cook.

“I remember when my son came to visit with his girlfriend and the girl called her mother that she should cook for my son, I was surprised. As a woman, you need to know how to cook. She just had to go. I told him it was a wrong note. He has to hit the key well. If you are a woman and you can’t cook, you are out”, he said. Agyapong’s remark comes amid a heated social media debate on the role of women in marriage.

The debate was sparked when a female member of a group of self-proclaimed “feminists”, calling itself Pepper Dem Ministries, suggested that women who took time to cook for their husbands were “slaving away”.

The remark drew strong condemnation from many Ghanaians, including renowned public figure, Joyce Aryee. “I don’t think cooking for your husband can be seen as slavery, No I don’t think so…making food for the one you love must not be seen as slavery. As a man, you can help your wife in the kitchen or just be around to chat with her,” Dr Aryee said in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM.

A veteran broadcaster, Tommy Annan-Forson, launched a vicious attack on the group, urging media managers to deny them coverage on their networks.

Others Ghanaians also responded by citing the case of Nigerian female billionaire, Folorunsho Alakija, who says she still cooks and washes for her husband unfailing, despite her rigorous work schedule.

“I still wash his undies until six years ago that he insisted I should stop. I also prepare his special vegetable dish, do his manicure and pedicure regularly. “I go to the airport to pick him whenever he’s returning from foreign trips. It gives me joy whenever his friends praise my vegetable dish based on what my husband tells them,” Mrs Alakija said.

Some women, led by popular broadcaster, Afia Pokua, have scrambled to form what they call Sugar Dem GH group to tackle what they say is the toxic anti-men message of “Pepper Dem Ministries” members.
