BETAwards: Check Out The Complete List Of Nominees And Winners

The BET Awards celebrated not only its 20th anniversary but also the increased focus currently on the Black community and culture Sunday, as artists used their performances to highlight the Black Lives Matter movement, civil rights and the lives of those lost because of police officers, including George Floyd.

The awards show was hosted by comedian and Insecure actress Amanda Seales. It marked the 20th year of the BET Awards and 40th year of BET. The ceremony, which honored Beyoncé with the 2020 Humanitarian Award, was simulcast across ViacomCBS networks, including BET, BET HER and CBS.

The annual show kicked off with teen gospel singer Keedron Bryant, 12,offering a powerful performance of his viral hit, “I Just Wanna Live.”

It then segued into Chuck D and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy performing an updated rendition of their classic 1989 hit, “Fight The Power,” with Nas, Black Thought, Rapsody and more artists joining.

Alicia Keys performed a haunting rendition of “Beautiful Way to Die.”

John Legend inspired with a powerful performance of “Never Break.” Megan Thee Stallion strutted her way through “Girls in the Hood.” Jennifer Hudson channeled Aretha Franklin in a performance that was followed by a new trailer for Respect. Lil Wayne paid tribute to NBA icon Kobe Bryant, who died in January, with a performance of his 2009 song “Kobe Bryant,” weaving in new lyrics.

The multi-talented Wayne Brady, in a glittery suit, rolled around on top of a piano as he sang a medley of Little Richard hits. Michelle Obama even put in an appearance, presenting the 2020 Humanitarian Award to Beyoncé, saying: “You can see it in everything she does, from her music that gives voice to Black joy and Black pain, to her activism that demands justice for Black lives.”
